What must I do to inherit eternal life?

Happy birthday Fr Leonard!

By Diana Marie

KUCHING — On 12 October, the congregation joined the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) to wish Fr Leonard Yap, the rector of Blessed Sacrament Church, Kuching, a happy 52nd birthday during the sunset Mass on the 28th Sunday of Ordinary time. This year incidentally also marked his 15th year since his ordination.

In his homily, Fr Leonard reflected that, just like the rich man in the Gospel reading, we too should ask, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Mk 10:17-30

What can be even more lasting than the things of this world if not authentic love and lasting relationships? Prioritising faith, our community and embracing the power of His word are essential for steering life’s challenges and making meaningful decisions.

Fr Leonard added that there is always so much more we could do to share with others in need, and that at times can feel overwhelming. We must therefore turn to Him, through our Lord Jesus Christ, and ask for His guidance and mercy.

“For men, it is impossible, but not for God: because everything is possible for God. A simple life lived for others is all it takes to rest in God’s loving embrace.”

At the end of Mass, the PPC presented Fr Leonard with a simple birthday cake followed by dinner afterwards. On behalf of Blessed Sacrament Church’s parishioners, we extend our gratitude for the gift of life from God and your parents for the person you are. We are grateful that you have chosen the priestly path and that you are the rector of our parish. We thank you for your faithful service.

Happy birthday Fr Leonard!
