KUCHING — Sr Bridget Then @ Rose Then (aged 95) was called home by our Heavenly Father on 24 December 2024 (Tuesday), 2.29 am at the Home of Santa Clara.

Sr Bridget Then (26 August 1929-24 December 2024)

On 26 December 2024 (Thursday) at 9.30 am, her Encoffin was done at the Home of Santa Clara. It was followed by a Funeral Mass at St Joseph’s Cathedral at 11.30 am. Thereafter, she was laid to rest at the 7½ Mile, Catholic Cemetery Kota Sentosa, Kuching.

The Funeral Mass was presided over by Archbishop Simon Poh, concelebrated with Archbishop Emeritus John Ha and five priests. The readings reminded us of God’s invitation to serve.

In Archbishop Simon’s homily, he conveyed a message about serving others by emphasising the importance of simplicity and humility in service. He highlighted that true service does not require grand gestures but can be found in everyday acts of kindness and care. He reflected on Sr Bridget’s life, noting that she dedicated herself to serving her community quietly and without seeking recognition. Her approach to service was characterised by warmth, welcome, and a nurturing spirit.

He also added that serving others is a divine invitation, suggesting that each person’s life and actions can influence those around them, whether in life or death. The essence of the message was that serving others is about being present, offering support, and living a life of love and faith in a simple, unassuming manner.

Over her 73 years of consecrated life, Sr Bridget remained steadfast in her commitment to her community, reflecting a life dedicated to God and service. We thank the Lord for the gift of her life.

Sr Bridget entered Postulancy at the age of 19, on 31 July 1948 and received her religious habit in February 1949. She took her First Profession on 19 August 1951 and made her Final Profession on 20 August 1956, aged 27.

Following which she was appointed/assigned to:

  • Sibu in 1951–1952 at Sacred Heart Convent later renamed St Elizabeth’s Convent under FMSJ
  • St Mary’s Convent, Sibu in 1956–1962
  • Our Lady of Lourdes Convent, Long San in 1962 – Dec 1963

  • St Agnes’ Convent, Bintulu in 1981–1997
  • St Rita’s Convent, Bau in 1998 – 3 June 2011

Prior to her full retirement, she was sent to Home of Santa Clara, Kuching in 2011 (4 June) until her last breath. In all the stations she was posted to—she actively was doing household duties, cooking as well as visiting the sick in their homes or hospitals. She was providing comfort and support to those in need, demonstrating her commitment to caring for others.

Throughout her whole life, Sr Bridget exemplified how simplicity and service can profoundly impact a community, emphasising that true service often lies in the quiet, everyday actions of love and care for others. Her great devotion to Mother Mary demonstrated her faith and she was blessedly alert at age 95.
