SIBU — The Young Priests Gathering (YPG) 2024 brought together 41 priests from the different dioceses in Malaysia and Singapore. They gathered at the Sibu Diocesan Pastoral Centre from 7 to 11 October.

The Opening Mass was presided by Bishop Richard Ng of Miri Diocese, while the Closing Mass was presided by Bishop Joseph Hii of Sibu Diocese.

As part of a continuous formation for young priests, the event provided a platform for reflection and sharing around the theme, “The Synodal Priest” by means of inputs given by Frs Ivan Fung and Joseph Sebastian; as well as Mr James Lau from the laity’s perspective.

Celebrating Holy Mass with a local community

Thereafter, the group visited the Parish of Sts Peter and Paul, Mukah and was assigned to different kampongs to stay overnight and celebrate the Holy Mass with the local communities the following day.

These visitations were not only about fellowships but was seen as an opportunity for the young priests to promote vocations to both priesthood and religious life.

As a whole, YPG2024 highlighted the vital role of priests in promoting synodality, with a focus on fostering unity and collaboration. The event encouraged priests to embrace synodality as a way of life, ensuring that they serve not only as administrators but also as spiritual guides and pastors, deeply involved in the lives of their parish communities.
