MIRI — The English Prayer Group of Miri Diocese is organising a series of Bible studies to cultivate the joy of discovering the Word of God. The first of the series was held on 24 – 25 September at St Francis Chapel.

During a two-day talk, Fr Andy Lee touched on the various Gospel passages where Christ had spoken prominently on the parables and Scriptural texts from the Old Testament.

Fr Andy said that reading the Word of God, both in the Old Testament and New Testament, must be part of the daily prayer life. He said that when the Word of God is internalised, it will help the people through the daily life and through the trials, suffering and hardships.

“The Holy Spirit had inspired the human writers, so the Word of God cannot go wrong or contradict itself,” he added. He cautioned the participants not to put their own meaning into the Word of God but to draw out the meaning from it. “We must understand the Old Testament in relation to the New Testament as Jesus himself had often relied on the Scriptures in his teachings as well as when he was tempted by the devil.”

Lastly, he urged the participants to share the Scripture with the community and to be Christ-centred.

The English Prayer Group will be organising more talks in the coming weeks and parishioners are invited to attend.
