The 48 (under 12 years old) participants were from the 16th Kuching Company Boys Brigade, 13th Kuching Company Girls Brigade, and the 11th Kuching Company Boys and Girls Brigade in Malaysia. They were accompanied by their Officers.
The ‘I AM SPECIAL’ event from 2.00 pm – 3.30 pm comprised topics on:
1. Child’s Right
2. Private Body Parts
3. Feelings, Touches and Touching Rules
4. Safety Tips
5. Cyber Safety
6. Support System
The programme opened with the rector of St Joseph’s Cathedral, Fr Nicholas Ng blessing the children.
The young children learnt that access to food, shelter, school education, protection, safety and having friends are part of a Child’s Basic Right.
They should know the correct terms of their Private Body Parts and should not be ashamed of them. It is important for them to protect their bodies.
No one should Touch their private parts except to keep them clean and healthy and No one should make them touch their private parts.
The most important Safety Tip is not to go out alone. There is safety in numbers.
They are to adopt Cyber Safety rules and be aware of Cyber Bullies who use electronic devices, eg hand phone or computer. Children should know who their online friends are.
The children need a Support System that includes knowing who the people are that they can trust and go to during instances when they don’t feel safe.
