KUCHING — On the morning of 17 August 2024, a spiritual formation on the “Greater Discernment of Spirits” took place at the Mater Domini Auditorium, ACCPC, drawing approximately 130 participants. It was facilitated by Fr James Tan, SJ from the Jesuit Development Office of Malaysia-Singapore.

Drawing from the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius of Loyola, this “greater” formation served as a sequel to an earlier session in April, which navigated the intricate dynamics between the good and the bad spirit, along with topics of spiritual consolation and desolation.

Fr James began by discussing consolation from God“a touch” or “a taste” that is experienced without preceding cause“when there is no thought, event or person which seems to be the source of such a movement”.

While consolation from the good spirit works “for the profit of the soul”, helping to strengthen and deepen one’s relationship with Christ, participants were told to exercise caution against the bad spirit which can manipulate positive feelings.

This slow transformation often begins with pious thoughts or holy desires, which can devolve over time towards selfish motives.

“We can grow as discerning persons by examining carefully the path our experiences have taken us,” Fr explained.

“If we find that from beginning to end, our eyes have remained fixed on the Lord, we can be sure that the good spirit has been moving us.”

He also urged participants to always acknowledge and recognise God as the source of true consolations.

The formation culminated with an engaging Q&A session followed by Holy Mass, providing attendees with a time of spiritual communion and reflection.

Participants also bid farewell to Fr James, who has visited Kuching frequently over the years. His role will be succeeded by Fr Sebastian Koh, SJ.
