SIBU — The clergy and parish community of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart celebrated the 37th anniversary of the dedication of the church on July 30.
Parish rector Fr Philip Hu and assistant priest Fr Cruzito Manding celebrated the Eucharist and together with the parishioners gave thanks to God for His blessings on the people of the mighty Rejang River basin.
Michael Kiu, Chairman of the Parish Pastoral Council in his speech, reminded everyone present that it is “our Cathedral’s birthday, which we always have to remember.
“Thirty-seven years ago, the Sacred Heart Church was offered to Our Lord to be upgraded to the status of a cathedral. This marked an important step forward in the development of Catholic churches in the central zone of Sarawak and the establishment of the Diocese of Sibu.
“Through the solidarity, continuous prayers from the parishioners and the hard work of our beloved bishops and clergy, the Cathedral continues to thrive and grow,” said Kiu.
“Due to the COVID pandemic, we missed the previous two birthdays of our parish and now we are looking forward to a bigger celebration during the 38th anniversary next year,” he added.
