KOTA KINABALU — On 29 May 2024, the OCDS communities in Malaysia had the honour of welcoming Fr Miguel Marquez Calle, OCD, the Superior General of the Discalced Carmelites, for a highly anticipated pastoral visitation in Kota Kinabalu.
Fr Miguel was accompanied by an esteemed Carmelite entourage that included Fr Christianus Surinono – OCDS Definitor from Rome, Fr Anselm Phang – General Delegate of the Delegation of Singapore-Thailand-Malaysia, and Fr Nicholas Hoh from Seremban, adding a special significance to the event.
The visit was marked by a deep spiritual renewal and reflection, as Fr Miguel shared profound insights drawn from Mary’s encounter with the angel Gabriel. One of his teachings centred around four pivotal messages, each offering guidance and inspiration for daily Christian living:
Rejoice: Fr Miguel emphasised the importance of joy in our spiritual journey, encouraging the faithful to embrace a spirit of rejoicing in all circumstances, reflecting Mary’s response to the angel’s greeting.
Do Not Be Afraid: Addressing common fears and anxieties, he reminded the community of the angel’s assurance to Mary, urging them to trust in God’s plan and cast aside their fears.
God Is With You: Fr Miguel reinforced the comforting presence of God in our lives, highlighting that just as the angel assured Mary of God’s presence, we too are never alone in our struggles and triumphs.
Nothing Is Impossible With God: Concluding his teachings, he inspired the community with the message of divine possibility, encouraging them to have faith in God’s power to bring about extraordinary outcomes in seemingly impossible situations.
The pastoral visitation was a time of profound reflection and spiritual enrichment for all who attended. The messages shared by Fr Miguel and the presence of the high-profile Carmelites have left a lasting impact on the OCDS community in Malaysia, inspiring them to live out these divine messages in their everyday lives.
The event concluded with a heartfelt expression of gratitude towards Fr Miguel and his entourage for their visit and their invaluable teachings, leaving the community spiritually uplifted and more deeply connected in their faith journey.
