BAU — Joseph Liew, a seminarian from the Archdiocese of Kuching was ordained deacon by Archbishop John Ha at St Stephen’s Church, Bau. The ordination Mass held on 30 April was attended by a few hundred faithful including some from the city parishes of Kuching.
During the ordination rite, Joseph took the vows of celibacy and obedience. The Archbishop laid hands on him and prayed that he be filled with the Holy Spirit to carry out faithfully the work of the ministry of deacon. Finally the newly ordained deacon was vested and handed the Book of the Gospels and told to “believe what you read, teach what you believe, and practice what you teach.”
In a short speech after the ordination mass, Deacon Joseph thanked all those who have journeyed with him and made the ordination possible. Archbishop Ha who also spoke challenged those who were eligible to seriously consider serving God as his priests and religious. He also thanked the family of Deacon Joseph for the gift of their son to the Church although they were not Christians. The celebration concluded with a buffet lunch hosted by the parish.
Deacon Joseph is currently serving in St Stephen’s Parish, Bau.
