KUCHING — On 9 September 2023, a thanksgiving Mass was celebrated at the retirement home chapel of Chapel of Mother Mary, Stutong to commemorate Fr Martin Wong’s 36th priestly ordination anniversary.

In his heartfelt homily, Fr Martin emphasised to the small congregation, of the importance of cherishing the elderly among us. He reminded them of the invaluable role they play in the community, while also encouraging everyone to pray continuously for more children to grow closer to God.

Parishioners at the Mass

As the Mass concluded, the parishioners in appreciation for their beloved priest, surprised him with a thanksgiving cake and arranged bouquet.

The celebration continued with live singing and a heart-warming recitation of the poem “Footprints in the Sand”, which resonated with Fr’s own spiritual journey.

Fr Martin delivers his homily

Fr Martin first discovered his vocation at the age of 15, in observing his mother’s daily devotion to the rosary. At 23, he felt another pull to the Church while working in the construction industry.

He pursued this vocation at St Francis Xavier Major Seminary, Singapore in 1981, followed by St Peter’s College Major Seminary, Kuching in mid-1983.

This led to his ordination as a deacon at St Mary’s Church, Sandakan, followed by his priestly ordination at Holy Trinity Church, Tawau by Bishop John Lee in 1988.

He has devoted the majority of his pastoral assignments to catechism to the young, nurturing the spiritual growth of the next generation.
