First training programme for the laity

SIBU — The first training programme of the Missionary Community of Corpus Christi (MCCC) Sibu Unit will begin on 23 February at the new MCCC training centre in Sibu.

Director of the Training Centre, Fr Ivan Fang, said it would be a four-month programme for all those interested.

“I’ve received many applications from Kuala Lumpur, Sibu, the Philippines and many other places. The training will focus on various practical skills that are useful for those going on mission abroad,” he explained.

Fr Ivan, who is also a Mill Hill Missionary priest, said missionaries would be sent to work abroad such as to Cambodia, China, and the Philippines.

He said he was very thankful to have the support from Bishop Joseph Hii of Sibu. “The Bishop sees the importance of training lay people for missionary work,” he said, adding that the Bishop also wished Catholics in Sibu to go abroad and be part of the missionary team.

Meanwhile, the construction of the living quarters at the MCCC training centre in Sentosa has already started.

In December 2013, Fr Ivan, in the presence of some committee members, blessed the ground where the building would stand.
“It will incorporate the main office and living area for the participants of the training programme. The existing building in the compound has three rooms which will be used as classrooms,” he said.

He hoped that the establishment of the training centre would inspire many lay Catholics to take up the call to carry out mission work overseas.
