SUNGAI PELEK, SEPANG — Showing the love of God through charitable acts is something all Christians can do. The love of Christians for other persons corresponds with the love of God for humankind.
In reaching out to the least fortunate, especially during the Recovery Movement Control Order (RMCO) period, the Chapel of the Holy Infant Jesus in Sungai Pelek in collaboration with a group of Catholics from Kuala Lumpur, organised a Food Aid Programme on August 1.
The programme was held at the chapel and benefitted 12 poor families from around the semi-rural town of Sungai Pelek. Among the 12 recipients present were a couple of differently abled persons, brought by an NGO whose two representatives were also present.
The Chapel chairperson, Nya na Joe, welcomed all to the first such event held in this decades-old chapel. The programme started with an Opening Prayer, followed by a speech by him. He narrated the efforts to help the less fortunate. “Today is for 12 non-Christian families,” he said. “Hopefully next time we can help more families.” He thanked the KL group for their collaboration with the chapel in this mission to reach out to the poor.
The KL group leader thanked all for coming and said that the Food Aid programme (total 605kgs consisting of 22 different items) was a way to lighten the burden of the 12 families selected by the chapel. Many low-income families, especially those in rural areas, face uncertainty and hardship during this time. He also mentioned that they welcomed all, irrespective of race or religion, and prayed that God would bless them. After a group photo session, all adjourned outside the chapel where the parishioners assisted in the distribution of the food items to the 12 poor families who were seated with the SOP in place.
After the distribution, the guests went back in high spirits.
Meanwhile the parishioners together with members of the KL group proceeded into the chapel for a 15-minute Reflection, focusing on how the parishioners themselves could group together to reach out and draw others to Christ. They closed with the hymn “Give Thanks”, thanking the Lord for everything.
The Chapel’s Administrator Fr Terrance Thomas, who is also the parish priest of the Church of Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Port Dickson, gave his permission for this event, but was unable to be present. Nonetheless he commended all involved for remembering the needy during this difficult time.
