KUCHING — It was another important historical event for SJK Sam Hap Hin when Archbishop Simon Poh performed the earth breaking ceremony cum blessing of the site for the new multipurpose school hall on 6 December.
Luke Khiu, representing the school board was accompanied by the school headmaster, Bong Nyuk Siong, two senior assistants and a few staff to welcome Archbishop Simon. The site manager, the architect together with their fellow workers were also present during the brief, yet meaningful, event.
According to Luke, the building of the new school multipurpose function hall was a long awaited project. SJK Sam Hap Hin is one of two Chinese Mission Schools in Kuching Archdiocese, and has 1200 pupils.
Currently, the school has a small hall which only accommodates a limited number of 200 pupils. Hence, all the important functions like school assembly, Chinese New Year Celebration, Teachers’ and Children’s Day Celebrations, and so on, were many times affected by bad weather, as these big events had to be carried out in the open space.
According to Tan Chen Sin, the construction site manager of【Hong Seng (East Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.】an estimated RM280 million is needed for the whole project.
The construction work was launched at the start of the school holidays, and it is expected to be completed within nine months. At present, the project is still short of RM120 million.
