Children are at the mercy of their parents – ‘Monkey see monkey do’

By Sarah Marimuthu-Lo

KUCHING  Children are not able to bring themselves to attend Mass or church/faith formation programmes on their own. They need parents to lead and guide them. Children also emulate their parents. Sunday Schools and Catechism teachers are only there as a supplementary to the faith growth of the child. Parents are their Prime Catechists. As such, parents must first do their part in committing themselves to the faith growth of their children. This was the vital message Fr Galvin Richard Ngumbang stressed to over 70 parents of St Joseph Cathedral Parish English Sunday School’s Primary level children, at the Parents’ Briefing on 9 May 2021.

This yearly event has been carried out by SJC Parish Sunday School for the past few years. Due to physical restrictions, this big gathering had to be held via Zoom and carried out twice instead of the usual one session. The objective of this event was to Touch Base with parents and also to encourage and engage parents in the faith formation of their children.

St Joseph Cathedral Parish has started their online Sunday School for all three languages and it was received with overwhelming response. We apologise to many more children and youth who wanted to sign up but the SJC Sunday School was not able to accommodate due to the lack of Catechism teachers. We need more teachers in order to open up additional classes.

We strongly appeal to parents and Catholic faithful to come forward to offer your service to the Faith Formation of our children, youth and adults. Should you feel a call to this ministry or just to find out more, please call Sarah M-Lo, Coordinator of Faith Formation at 082-412650.
