KUCHING — Caritas Malaysia kickstarted its first online Communication Workshop for its community leaders serving the nine dioceses. The series of social media skills include Writing, Photography and Videography.

About 25 community leaders across the various Malaysian dioceses gathered over two evenings in March 2021, to learn and discuss how to better equip themselves in writing.

The two-part online writing workshop, was conducted by Karen Arukesamy, former journalist with theSun and president of SIGNIS Malaysia. The workshop was organised by Caritas Malaysia and Public Media Agency in collaboration with SIGNIS, the World Catholic Association for Communication.

Karen shared with participants her knowledge and practice in basic writing for social media, web and blogs, and offered insights on how to achieve effectively the importance of the “5Ws and 1H”.

She also expanded on how to build and deliver different types of news content, and the ‘do’s and don’ts’ of social media—what to be mindful of before publishing.

Participants had the opportunity to pose questions and seek answers at a Q&A session at the end of each workshop.

The social media skills series is to train community leaders from parishes and ministries in aspects of writing, photography and videography, and to reach out to new and current volunteers, collaborators and benefactors.

Those who attended would then be able to share their learning experiences and workshop materials to help their local parishes, ministries in the dioceses.

The online photography and videography series will be covered in the coming workshops in April and June 2021.
