Bishop Emeritus James celebrates 96th birthday

JOHOR BAHRU — Bishop Emeritus James Chan celebrated his 96th birthday on July 26, the feast of Sts Anne and Joachim.

A simple celebration was held at Graceville, home for retired clergy and elderly to wish him good health and happiness in the years ahead.

Bishop Emeritus James, the first bishop of Malacca Johore Diocese retired in 2001. Among his major achievements during his 28-year tenure was the establishment of Majodi Centre and the construction of several parishes throughout the diocese, one of which is the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart.

Two of his greatest accomplishments are that he was among three bishops who initiated the Aggiornamento where the New Way of Being Church was born. This later fostered the BECs, and the invitation to 10 new religious congregations to serve in the diocese.

Although Bishop Emeritus James feels the weakness of ageing, he is still a shining example of the simple, kind, humble and approachable bishop. Being with him is to encounter the tenderness and meekness of a true servant of Christ.

Do continue to keep Bishops Emeriti James Chan and Paul Tan, and all the retired priests and residents of Graceville in your prayers. May the peace and love of our Lord be with them as they enjoy their much deserved rest in their twilight years.
