SERIAN — On Saturday 27 April 2024, St Theresa’s Parish Serian organised an Altar Servers Workshop at St Paul, Kampung Rayang. The workshop involved altar servers from several villages such as Kampung Rayang as the hosting village, Kampung Munggu Kupi, Kampung Tarat Sibala, Kampung Tarat Melawi, Kampung Baru Mawang, Kampung Murut Plaman, Kampung Sebanban, Kampung Kakai and Kampung Plaman Baki.

More than 67 participants from the nine villages participated in the workshop with 15 of them from the Church Youth Ministry (CYM) of Kampung Rayang.

The day began with the registration of participants and welcoming session, followed by a presentation by Mr Jesse William (St Theresa’s Altar Servers vice leader). Mr Jesse spoke about the importance of the altar server ministry, the six liturgical seasons including the colours of each season and about the items that are being used at Mass.

The next talk was presented by Mr Christ Davis (St Theresa’s Altar Servers leader), explaining each part of a Mass to give clarification to everyone involved. The last presenter, Mr Augustine Lian, did a practical of a Mass together with five altar servers from some of the participating villages. Furthermore, Mr Augustine also gave a short briefing regarding what to do and what not to do at a Mass.

The workshop concluded with Mass celebrated by Fr Robert Jissem. Five participants from the workshop served at the Holy Mass guided by two St Theresa’s altar servers. In his homily, Fr Robert thanked the altar servers for their service and encouraged them to continue to grow in their faith.

The Altar Servers Workshop is an event that provides youths with the opportunity to learn more about altar serving and to grow their faith. Most importantly, the workshop encourages the youths to fulfil their responsibility as Catholics, to live fully by faith and also encourage others to know more about the Catholic Church and the second coming of our Lord.
