KOTA PADAWAN — The spirit of Christmas came alive on the evening of 22 December 2024, as St Ann’s Church hosted its annual “Christmas Carol by Candlelight” celebration. The event, held at the Church’s open-air grounds (Piazza of Mother Mary), attracted hundreds of parishioners and visitors from the local community, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.
The celebration began at 7.30 pm with an opening prayer led by the newly appointed assistant priest, Friar Nelson Evarinus, OFM, while the rector, Friar Don Don Romero Ramerez, OFM, welcomed attendees with heartfelt words.
He emphasised the importance of unity, peace, and joy during the Christmas season. “Tonight, we gather not just to sing carols but to reflect on the light of hope in Christ that shines in our lives and in the world, especially with this beautiful weather. He has answered our prayers,” he said.
In his speech, he posed the question, “am I open to God?” and reminded everyone that “even when life is full of challenges, God never leaves us. He sent His child so we may live in peace and love.”
Following the opening speech, a stunning fireworks display officially inaugurated the carol night ceremony. The evening’s programme featured performances by nine Church choirs from various zone chapels, youth groups, and the children’s ministry.
Traditional carols such as “O Come, All Ye Faithful” and “O Holy Night” resonated beautifully in the candlelit setting, evoking a sense of wonder and reverence. Contemporary Christmas songs added a modern touch, delighting younger audience members.
One of the highlights of the evening was a re-enactment of the Nativity scene by the children’s ministry. The young performers, dressed as angels, shepherds, and the Holy Family, captivated the audience with their heartfelt portrayal of the story of Christ’s birth.
As the evening progressed, attendees joined in a communal carolling session, holding candles that illuminated the night with a soft, flickering glow. This symbolic act of lighting candles served as a reminder of the light of Christ dispelling darkness and bringing hope to the world.
The celebration concluded with a blessing by Friar Don Don Romero Ramerez, OFM, and the singing of “Joy to the World” filled the air with jubilant voices and a renewed sense of community. Many attendees stayed afterwards to share fellowship over light refreshments provided by the Church.
The “Christmas Carol by Candlelight” event has long been a cherished tradition at St Ann’s Church, fostering a sense of togetherness and spiritual renewal. This year’s celebration was particularly meaningful, marking the first Christmas celebrated on the open-air grounds.
As the candles dimmed and the crowd dispersed, the joy and peace of the evening lingered in the hearts of all who attended, reminding them of the true meaning of Christmas. May God bless everyone. Merry Christmas!
