Catholic Bible study course a great success

Some participants jubilantly showing off their certificates

KUCHING — 15 December saw more than 110 participants from different parishes in the Archdiocese of Kuching celebrating their successful completion of “The Great Adventure: Bible timeline (History of Salvation) Catholic Bible Study Course” with a Thanksgiving Mass and potluck fellowship at Holy Trinity Church, Kenyalang. Rev Fr Augustine Jepy who celebrated the Mass reminded the participants that living and putting the Word of God into action in their daily lives is as important as reading and learning it.

“The Great Adventure: Bible Timeline (History of Salvation) Catholic Bible Study Course” is a 24-session Bible course for Catholics, one of the series of “The Great Adventure: Bible Timeline”. The course was conducted from 7 July – 15 December. Reading assignments, homework, group discussion and lessons given by Jeff Cavins through DVD made up the course.

Most participants found the course a great adventure because they could understand the link between the Old Testament and the New Testament better. They now know the whole story of salvation and God’s plan and love for mankind. They now see Jesus, as the “seed of the woman” sent to crush the head of the “seed of the serpent” (Gen 3), as the Son of David, the Son of Abraham, the new Moses, the true Manna, the new Temple and learned what that means for us today. They also learned how Jesus reconstituted the struggling kingdom of Israel around himself and opened the Kingdom of God to all people. Many discovered the story line in the Bible and the period where each Book in the Bible fits and thus making Bible reading a lot easier and more interesting. To others, attending Mass has become a lot more meaningful and the readings have become alive. Many too discovered their own personal story in the History of Salvation.

About 80 percent of the course participants have signed up for the next series of the Bible Course, which is on the “Gospel of St Matthew: The King and His Kingdom”, to be conducted from 9 February – 2 August this year.
