Students reach out to children and youths with disabilities on Gawai

KUCHING — In conjunction with the Gawai Dayak Harvest Festival, the Kuching Young Christian Students (KYCS) took part in a Gawai Food Parcel Project. This Community Rehabilitation Project, initiated by the group “Meeting Needs” is run by volunteers Sue Walker and Caroline Adriaanse who sort the participation from the Catholic Church through the Kuching Archdiocesan Youth and Vocation Commission (KAYVC). Parcels of food were given out to Dayak families with learning disabilities which have increased over the past few years.

Inspired to make a difference this festive season, YCS students and their families from Kolej Abdillah, SM Lodge, SMK Batu Lintang, SMK Green Road, SMK Sg Maong, SMK St Joseph and SMK St Teresa generously donated food items and used clothing for eight families in Kpg Kopit, Kpg Merembeh, Kpg Sogo and Kpg Puak, Bau. These Catholic families have children who are slow learners either with Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy or mental problems, or have sick parents who are unable to provide for their family.

On behalf of the students the KYCS Student Animators delivered the food items to the families on Sunday 29 May. All the families have reason to be grateful for. Not only were they given food but also they received Rosaries and spent time praying together wit the Student Animators.

The Therapy Playroom (located at Jln Dogan) is a development and therapy centre for children and adults with these disabilities. This Gawai Food Parcel Project is one of their charitable acts to these families. Prospective sponsors or any organisation interested in a Powerpoint presentation, and others who wish to refer individuals with such disabilities are requested to contact Sue or Caroline directly at 016-8731376.
