St Gonzalo Gracia Padang Pan Youth Camp: A Journey of Faith and Fellowship

Spirit of faith and unity after the Way of the Cross for the youths.

By Seminarian Lordkennylister P James

BAU — The St Gonzalo Gracia Padang Pan Youth Camp, held on 24–25 August 2024, brought together 35 enthusiastic youths with the objectives of strengthening good relations among them and bringing them closer to Jesus.

The camp began at 3.30 pm on a beautiful rainy day. The first session, titled “Vocations: Discovering God’s Plan for You,” was led by Seminarian Lordkennylister. This session included talks from various vocations, guided discernment activities, and opportunities for personal reflection and prayer. It aimed to help the youth understand their life direction, whether it be towards priesthood, religious life, or marriage.

Following the session, the youth engaged in games designed to build community, energise participants and reflect the joy of faith. These activities helped the young people get to know each other, stay focused, and see that spiritual growth can be fun and creative.

Due to the unpredictable weather, the planned campfire was replaced with a special Way of the Cross devotion for youth. This devotion allowed the youth to connect deeply with the passion and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It provided a structured way for them to meditate on Jesus’ suffering and love, develop empathy and compassion, and actively participate in their faith. The session ended with the youth lighting candles as an act of prayer, concluding at 9.30 pm.

The second day started with Sunday Mass at 8.30 am. The next session, “Discipleship and Evangelisation: Sharing the Faith,” was led by Seminarian Melvin Dawson. This session focused on the call to discipleship and encouraged the youth to actively share their faith. They also learnt the Five Finger Prayer, a simple method to pray for various groups of people. The camp concluded with more games and a final prayer session.

We hope that this organised programme will achieve its objective of strengthening relationships among the youth and bringing them closer to Jesus.

Special thanks to Fr Peter Liston, rector of St Stephen’s Church, Bau, for allowing the seminarians to organise this programme, and to the St Gonzalo community for providing logistics and meals.

Bible Verse: “Let no one have contempt for your youth, but set an example for those who believe, in speech, conduct, love, faith, and purity.” (1 Timothy 4:12, NAB)

This camp was a testament to the vibrant faith and dedication of our young Catholics, and we look forward to many more such enriching experiences.
