KUCHING — St Joseph’s Cathedral, Kuching, commemorated her 55th Parish Feast Day on the Solemnity of St Joseph. The Holy Mass was presided by Archbishop Simon Poh and concelebrated by Archbishop Emeritus John Ha, Parish Rector Fr Nicholas Ng, Fr Galvin Ngumbang and Fr Mark Bonchol.

55 years ago on 19 March 1969, Monsignor Charles Reiterer consecrated the Cathedral.

Archbishop Simon reminisced his installation as the third Archbishop of Kuching seven years ago on 20 March 2017, by (then) Archbishop John Ha. He said many priests in the archdiocese were also ordained in St Joseph’s Cathedral.

The prelate recounted that he was blessed by St Joseph when he was a student at St Joseph’s School and his conversion from a non-Christian background, encouraging parents to “give” their children to God, saying “the family will be blessed.”

Known as the “sleeping St Joseph” the patron saint of the Cathedral was a “model of total surrender to God.”

Among the congregation was a group of seniors from the Singapore Mercy Mission Group who were on a short mission visit to Kuching and Kalimantan.
