KUCHING — Blessed Sacrament Church (BSC) Tuition Ministry was inaugurated on 20 January 2018. The ministry, initiated by the BSC Parish Pastoral Council, started with about 15 dedicated volunteers and 25 pupils last year. This year sees the involvement of 23 volunteers who are teaching about 40 pupils.
The ministry’s vision, in line with the parish’s vision statement, is to be the Eucharistic community that reveals God’s love in Christ through education.
In order to accomplish this vision, the ministry provides educational support for pupils who mainly come from socio-economically challenged backgrounds within the parish vicinity.
This ministry serves as a platform for outreach and as an avenue for parishioners, who may or may not have teaching experience, to volunteer their time and effort.
The tuition classes that are free-of-charge for the pupils are held on Saturday mornings for two hours in the church’s premises. With higher teacher to pupil ratio, the classes are conducted in small-group settings.
The pupils are engaged with learning activities in BM, English, Mandarin and Mathematics. They range from games, songs, big-book reading, and art and craft. Currently, the ministry serves pupils from Primary 1 to 4.
This year, the ministry has plans to develop the spirituality of the volunteer teachers as well as to provide more support for them in their journey as educators.
Registration for volunteers can still be made through the BSC Parish Office 082-578857. For further information, please contact Mr. Simon Pui at 016-8766494 or Mr. Justin Ho at 011-51135788.
