By St Mark’s Parish

KUCHING — St Mark’s Church, Kuching is appealing for the support of the Catholic community and public to realise its dream to become a parish.

It needs the community to be involved in raising RM20 million for the development of the parish.

St Mark’s current church

Rector of St Mark’s Church and Sacred Heart Church, Fr Felix Au said that the development of the parish is divided into four phases:

Phase 1 consists of the construction of the parish office and rectory. Phase 2 will cover the construction of 4 1/2 storey classroom block for meetings and Sunday School. Phase 3 will see the construction of a multi-purpose activity hall while the final phase is the extension of the existing church for worship.

The fund-raising project will start off with a fund-raising dinner at the Christian Ecumenical Worship Centre on 15 April 2023 followed by a Fun Run on 1 May 2023.

Participation cards for the Fun Run are being distributed for the collection of sponsorship towards the fund-raising project. The run consists of two categories—5km and 3km. Participants are encouraged to raise at least RM100 and that will entitle them a commemorative cap. As this is a Fun Run, no prizes will be awarded.

The church will also carry out various activities to raise funds, namely St Mark’s Pledge forms whereby donors will make monthly contributions over a three-year period and St Mark’s Fiesta Sale.

Construction work of the present building started in 1997. It was officially declared open in 1999. It serves one of the fast growing Catholic communities in Kuching, and is currently under the pastoral care of Sacred Heart Parish, Kota Sentosa. Every Sunday, over 2,000 Catholics attend Mass at St Mark’s Church.
