PUTATAN, SABAH — Billions of Catholics around the globe celebrated last week’s Easter Triduum – the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

In the enormous numbers of believers were the small Catholic community in Kg Potuki in Putatan who did not miss to celebrate this most holy time of the year in the calendar of the Catholic Church.

In the heart of the Kg Potuki is the Chapel of Woori Jib St Francis Xavier which is also a welfare home for orphans from poor Catholic families, sponsored by the Clerical Society of the Most Holy Trinity of Mirinae, South Korea (SST).

Fr Lawrence Kim presided the Easter Triduum Masses, Apr 1-4 for 200 Potuki parishioners, a number allowed as per SOP, including those from outside the area.

On Easter morning, Apr 4, Fr Kim invited the people to celebrate new life offered by Jesus Christ’s resurrection by forgiving grudge and resentment.

“Everyone (who) wants to resemble Jesus Christ, must forgive grudge and resentment, then you will be able to meet the resurrected Jesus.

“We all need to live a life of forgiveness, always with the love of Jesus Christ, who is risen today,” he said.

The Cross of Jesus on Good Friday
In the pandemic time, parishioners venerate the Cross of Jesus by bowing only.

In the beginning of his Easter homily, Fr Kim gave an illustration of a life that most people live in; “First, the name is written on rock, secondly, the name is written on sand, and thirdly, the name is written on water.”

“True life is not a life written on rock or written on sand.

“If life is like a rock, then we can never forgive someone who has hurt us, we could have scars, carved on rock, from parents, from husband or wife, from children, and maybe from your friends, or from colleagues or even from bosses, … a lot more.

“It must be a life written on water because we cannot write on water. It continues to flow,” he emphasized.

He invited the people to be happy because of Jesus and said, “I would like you to live happily in bright light like the candle that you have lighted last night”.

The Paschal Candle
Each individual’s candle is lit from the sacred fire of the Paschal candle, representing Christ coming into the world.

Fr Kim also said that the mystery of the resurrection of God reveals to us God’s call to be His co-workers to heal the world, offering healing for all wounds and enmity, in the many simple events of life.

Earlier on Good Friday, as customary, the Potuki people meditated the Way of the Cross on Potuki Hill as early as 7.30am, led by Fr Kim.
