KUCHING — The Legion of Mary Apostolate (LoM) ended their year long double anniversary celebration with a Thanksgiving Mass and dinner held on the 17 December 2011 at the Christian Ecumenical Centre attended by more than 1000 legionaries including guests from Singapore, Sabah and Sibu.
The Thanksgiving Mass was presided over by the Archbishop John Ha, Archbishop Emeritus Dato Sri Peter Chung, Bishop Dominic Su, Monsignor William Sabang, Fr Simon Poh and Fr Nicholas Ng followed by dinner.
Twenty nine legionaries were acclaimed for having served more than 30 years in the Archdiocese of Kuching. Br John Chin and Sr Patricia Harry were among the outstanding recipients for having served 60 years in LoM.
In his message for the souvenir magazine, Archbishop John Ha commended the work of the Legionaries. “Gratitude is expressed in many ways. The clearest way is for Legionaries to offer their lives to God in the footsteps of Mother Mary. Like her, they are called to give an undivided and unconditional YES to God, loving him wholeheartedly and single-mindedly and loving others as oneself, as God has commanded. Responding to this call, as Mary’s life shows, leads to prayer which is entering into a union of love with God and service of neighbour.”
“The LoM anchors itself in both prayer and service. The Marian prayer is the way in which a Legionary pledges to imitate Mary to be led by the power of the Holy Spirit into union with God. From this union with God, the Legionary finds the motivation, zeal and strength to reach out to people in need and bring Christ to them. The weekly meeting where reports are made of assigned ministries is a form of both accountability and encouragement,” he added.
His Grace concluded his message: “I offer my heartiest congratulations to all Legionaries in Sarawak on their double jubilee and extend a call to them to heed our Blessed Mother’s advice, ‘Do as he tells you (Jn 2:25).’”
On the lighter side, both senior and junior Legionaries entertained the crowd with different dance performances and ended with a group singing of “We are the world” which delighted those present.
